Membership in KHMTA includes four classes:
Active membership, which includes private music teachers engaged in teaching any branch of music. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in music or a minimum of two years Provisional Membership in KHMTA. A transferee from another nationally affiliated association may become an Active Member with a letter of recommendation from the previous association.

Provisional membership, which includes teachers with a minimum of three years music teaching experience and ten years of music study with at least two years of study after high school. Teaching and study requirements may be completed during provisional membership. Two letters of recommendation from professional musicians are also required. Active membership may be acquired after two years of Provisional Membership in good standing.
Secondary membership, which includes teachers who hold primary membership in another music teachers' group.
Student Teacher Membership
Student teacher membership, which includes students who are teaching under the supervision of a teacher who is a full KHMTA member.
